Intuition - How To Stop Fighting Yourself
The "Push Me - Pull You" Syndrome
Did you ever see the movie Dr Doolittle?
There was strange animal called the Pushmi-Pullyu.
In the movie. the Pushmi-Pullyu
is an a Llama type creature which has two heads at opposite ends of the
body. When it tries to move, both heads try to go in opposite
directions.
There was also a Push Me/ Pull You Car. Maybe a VW? But it looked the same front and back...and would go either way.
Sound familiar?
Same animal. Same brain. But each end is fighting the other.
One wants to go eat Corn...and tries to drag the other half to eat the corn.
The other wants to nibble on carrots...so he tries to move the other half towards the carrots.
That's the way the Mind is...most of the time.
And that's why quieting the mind is not only good for your mental health...but good for making decisions.
Trying To Do "To Much"
I came to work this morning with a full plate.
There were times in the past, if I had to much to do, I would tend towards "not doing anything".
It doesn't matter the priority...or what would "make me happy"...or what needed to be done "to please the boss".
The fact was there would be times I would be almost paralyzed.
Why?
The Beginning of the Day...The best plans are subject to distraction
I've learned that if I prepare for the day, that's it best to come in and not do anything else until I start on the important things. I don't take calls. I don't' check my voice mail. I don't check my emails. I just start my work that's left over and get it done.
All that other stuff just adds new things that I don't need yet.
What happens in your brain...is you come in ready...and focused...and when you get distracted...it throws the brain off. It starts saying..."Hey, wait a second. You told me you were going to do this...but now you're not sure...now you're not ready...well forget it" and it will let you sidetrack yourself.
The problem is not just the diversion...but the time it takes for you to get back on track.
I compare it to your computer locking up.
There are times when your computer locks up, right. No special reason. But it freezes.
Then you waste time trying to figure it out.
(Why? It's locked up before. You know the stuff doesn't work.)
Then you finally exhaust yourself and say "Okay, I need to shut it down and reboot"
And that takes how long???? To long for sure.
You're sitting there seething and annoyed because it's taking so long.
That''s the same way you're mind works.
Every time you get off course...you have to reboot yourself. And it takes more time to get back on track than it would have to do a lot of the work you had planned. Plus you're aggravated. (At least I get aggravated.)
Your Mind Can Be A Million Places At Once...But You Can't
Another way to look at is this...Your mind can be in a million places at once...but you can't.
The mind wants you to do everything at once...but you physically can't do that. (At least I can't)
So if my mind is winning, sometimes I just sit down...put any list I have away...and just take the one thing I want to do...and then I write it on a piece of paper in big letters and put it in front of me.
I literally will take a 8 x 10 piece of paper...a big marker...and write out what I need to do. In letters that take up the whole page.
If my mind is really racing...I won't write down Write Blog...I will write down the exact first step...Open Documents....do that...take a breath or two or three...to slow things down...throw that piece of paper away. Then write down...write headline...and on and on.
It's a physical way to slow the mind down.
Another way is to hear the voice in your head (usually it's racing along and talking in a very commanding tone) and purposefully slow it down.
If it's saying....writeyourblogwhatsitgoingtobeonhowlongshoulditbetodayohIalreadycoveredthatI'llwaittolaterwhatifirunoutoftimewillitbegoodenough....
I'll let it run on...but slow it down...wriiiiiiitteeeee yoouuuuuuuuuuuur bloooooooggggggggg. Stoppppppppp. Breatheeeeee.
You can't tell it to slow down...it doesn't like that. But if you mentally slow down, it will go along.
Notice that when the mind races like this it talks to you in both Declarations and Questions. It says something...then questions it...gives an answer...then questions that. That's a legitimate loop. But if runs to fast it never gives you time to get a real answer.
That's where I get myself in trouble. I get this knee jerk answer...and act that way...and end up...you know...acting jerky.
A couple of side points:
1) It seems for some reason that the person who is the "logical type" is the most subject to distractions. Let me know if you believe that.
2) The first couple of times you try this, it will be hard. That's because you're changing a habit. Once you get used to it...you can change it very quickly.
3) In fact, you can anchor that new way of thinking to a physical movement or touch...so it happens almost automatically. If any of you NLP experts want to comment on that...or give some instructions, feel free.
The End of The Day...The Stuff of Dreams...or Nightmares. How To Get A Good Nights Sleep
I know some people like to plan their day the night before.
That's actually a good idea in some ways.
You can program your subconscious mind with the next days tasks...and ask your mind to solve problems while your sleeping.
If you've never heard of that before, it might sound weird.
But all you do is tell yourself to remember what you planned...and then hit the hay.
Now if you still stay up thinking about all the plans...or wake up in the middle of the night screaming...that's a different story.
And instead of trying to fight the thoughts that are invading your brain before you go to sleep...I suggest you get back up and write down the thoughts that are coming in. That takes both the Mental Strain off...and the Physical Strain. Somehow writing relieves many of the doubts you are hiding...and that's a huge relief.
That's for stuff that I would call The Physical Environment.
Changing Attitudes and Beliefs In Your Sleep
If it's attitudes, or beliefs, I have a going to bed ritual to clear some of that stuff up in my head...and in my heart.
I do it in the form of a prayer...but really it could be seen as directing your mind to do certain things.
I say:
1) I want to wake up tomorrow a better man than I was today.
2) If there is a certain thing holding on to my emotions or holds me back I ask for a "Spiritual Lobotomy". What I mean by that is, I command my mind to remove those beliefs and thoughts from whatever part of my brain or mind is holding on to it.
It works for me. Part of it is being aware of what I want changed...and defining it...and becoming willing to let it go. That's the conscious part.
It's done in shorthand. I don't labor over it.
The unconscious part is letting the mind do what I'm directing it to.
One thing I've learned is if I don't have a certain problem on my mind...I don't have to search for one or make one up.
One of the weaknesses of Rituals is they are all supposed to be the same thing.
But if you don't have a specific thought you want to get rid off...it will drive you crazy...because "I'm not doing it right"
If that's the way you are...and you want it to be a consistent practice (creating good habits one of the good things about rituals)...then instead of searching for something, give your mind the carte blanche to come up with it's own solutions. That's giving your mind permission to let it's Intuitive Processor go to work for you.
Say something like, "I don't know what I need to change. But you do. So do it!"
I don't know if it's my mind that's working here...or God...or whatever. ( I happen to think they work together.) But I know I get results.
Thanks,
Intuitive John
PS Yesterday you guys had some great comments about Horoscopes.
One of my favorite was the day it said "Make sure you avoid small appliances" Huh!

Great advice. I find it so helpful to make a list and also really helpful to put a nice big tick bite things as you complete them. It gives you a real sense of progress through the day and even if you don't end up finishing everything, you can look at what you have achieved and feel good about that.

Great blog post. This addresses what has been one of the toughest habits for me to form, i.e. focusing on one task at a time until I've completed that task. I'm going to use the technique of writing down what I'm working on on a big sheet of paper.
