Years ago I was in an LRT seminar where a pair of twin heart surgeons...young...handsome... successful...living the Miami lifestyle...asked the teacher how could they spend more time in India (where they went regularly) so they could be more "pure" and "authentic" in their spiritual quest.
I chuckled to myself. The tone was so serious it was almost pleading. "We are rich but conflicted".But the teacher made a point that neither of them expected. And I guess none of the other students would have guessed at either.
The answer was basically, if you believe in Karma, and believe you were put here on this earth for specific purposes, then work with your circumstances here and stop fighting it.
You were born in America, a land of riches and widespread abundance, so stop trying to run away. Stay here and fulfill your destiny.
The point is many of the meditation styles that grew out of the East just happened to originate and grow in that region. And two thousand years ago, there was no America. The country was poor, and the people were poor (wasn't everybody poor two thousand years ago???), but that doesn't mean you have to take a vow of poverty to use the techniques they adapted.
Take your gifts you have here and use them.
One time I was reading an interview with a "holy man" from the east. I wish I could remember his name. And he backed this up too.
When they asked him about the sacred sitting positions for meditation and Yoga, he answered in a bemused tone that their was nothing sacred or special about them. They developed because there weren't a lot of chair around in the huts and woods!

I love the comment towards the end about the yoga positions and there just not being a lot of chairs around back then. Very funny.

John-
Excellent point about karma and working it out where you are. One of my favorite new-agey-type people, Stuart Wilde, says the same thing in much of his writing. Too many people are chasing "nirvana" in the wrong direction.

But I think you can choose to live anywhere you want. The point is you don't keep chasing meaning in meaningless ways.
